Scienc.e.s: no science without us!

LATE REGISTRATION: You can still register to attend but lunch and dinner registrations are closed.

Hello everyone,

We are the organising committee of Scienc-e-s - No science without us! a multidisciplinary conference committed to inclusivity in science. We would like to promote a science based on respect for the identities and diversity of current and future scientists. This is why we are pleased to announce the first Scienc-e-s conference, which will take place on 14 November 2024 at the Centre de Biologie Intégrative (CBI) in Toulouse. This conference will provide an opportunity to discuss issues that are close to our hearts and that concern us all: the inclusion of people from minority backgrounds in research, gender bias in the academic world, sexist and sexual violence at university, and so on. This conference will also be broadcast by videoconference.

For this first edition, we are honoured to welcome Odome Angone, university lecturer and researcher at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, who will open this day of discussions with a plenary lecture entitled ‘Politicising scientific neutrality’.

Odome Angone is a lecturer at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, where she teaches contemporary Spanish Hispano-African and Afrodescendant literature.
The author of numerous scientific articles and various collective works, her reflections engage in a committed dialogue on Africa's contributions to the international trade in ideas.
Her work and conferences focus on epistemic justice and the practical usefulness of knowledge production in the dynamics of social transformation, particularly with regard to the sociology of identities, taking into account theories on African feminisms, the geopolitics of borders and the Cyberworld.
Femmes noires francophones (2020) is her most recent essay, Roi-dieu coupé (2013) her first novel. She edited the collective work Las españolas afrodescendientes hablan sobre identidad y empoderamiento (2018). She recently prefaced the collective work Personas africanas y afrodescendientes en España ayer y hoy: Proyecciones y posicionamientos en la literatura, el arte y los medios (2024).
She is also a member of the GIRCI (Groupe Interdisciplinaire de Recherche sur les Cultures et les Identités) at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar; a member of the Voces africanas research group (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain), a research associate at the IMAF (Institut des Mondes Africains, France), and a research associate at the ERC Starting Grant project AFROEUROPECYBERSPACE at the University of Bremen (Germany). Since 2023, she has been the Senegal correspondent for the Observatoire Permanent de l'Hispanisme.
She is also the co-creator of the decolonial SIRA Summer University, the second edition of which will be held in Dakar in 2025.
Odome Angone is also the founder of ZONES GRISES, a platform for critical thought and a laboratory for Afrodiasporic reflection and dialogue on the co-construction of collective memory from the margins.

Short talks and round table

The conference will then be followed by a series of short presentations by researchers representing this diversity, who will present their research topics. These presentations are also open to people who are involved in projects to promote inclusivity and diversity in research and education and who would like to showcase them.

The day will conclude with a round table discussion at which the various speakers will be able to share their personal experiences and inclusive research projects with the audience. In this way, we aim to bring together research, experience and reflection on the themes of inclusivity.

Activity: Draw your science!

To  wrap up the day in style, we invite you to stay for some social time and take part in our activity Draw your science! Paper, pencil, scientists from all backgrounds: in small groups we'll discuss our vision of science and research in a fun activity. It's a fun way to get to know each other, and a good chance to win some goodies!

Registrations are now open!

Come and participate to the short talks...

We're looking for speakers for our short presentations. These presentations will last 15 minutes each (including 5 minutes of questions) and will preferably be given in English (French is also accepted if you don't speak English). You will also be invited to take part in the round table discussion at the end of the symposium if you wish. Participation in this event is, of course, free of charge and includes coffee breaks and dinner.

If you are a doctoral student, post-doctoral researcher, research engineer, researcher, lecturer, or any other research actor, and you are part of a minority (gendered person, gender minority, racialized person, LGBTQIA+ person, person with a disability), you are welcome to participate in :

  • A friendly conference: to showcase your research to a diverse and inclusive audience, in a setting that we'll make as safe as possible (moderation of questions, child-friendly space);
  • A place to share: to express your views on the difficulties encountered in the academic world, to share your experience with other people concerned, and to imagine solutions to these obstacles;
  • A meeting place: to meet research players from different backgrounds who share common values, and see new scientific and human collaborations emerge!

... Or simply attend as a visitor

Whether you are interested in presenting your work, or simply want to attend this conference, we invite you to fill in our registration form. We hope to see many of you there, so that together we can show that science has many faces! No science without us!
